Violent crime in public spaces fell during the pandemic – in private, however, it increased. Overall, according to the Federal Minister of the Interior, Germany is one of the safest countries in the world.
Berlin – According to a report, crime in Germany is declining overall. It fell by 15 percent from 2005 to 2019, “mainly influenced by the significant decline in property and property offenses,” reported the Funke media group, citing information from the federal government.
In the case of serious violent crime, too, the number of cases has therefore decreased. The corona pandemic led to a decrease in violence in public – but to an increase in private space.
“Germany is one of the safest countries in the world,” said Federal Interior Minister Horst Seehofer (CSU) accordingly. “But security is an ongoing task for which we have to work hard every day.”
The information relates to the so-called periodic safety report. Seehofer explained that anyone who wants to fight crime successfully needs more than statistics. The security report looks back on the last 15 years of crime development. It contains the bundled knowledge of numerous experts from the police and judiciary. dpa
