The fire broke out early Tuesday morning in the Sint Marten district. Firefighters had the fire under control after more than six hours. Several houses are currently uninhabitable. It is still unknown how the fire started. This is being researched. One local resident was taken to hospital on Tuesday, partly because he had inhaled a lot of smoke.
One of the victims is most likely the 45-year-old resident of the burnt-down house above a barn behind one of the houses. The police have not yet officially established the identity, but several people directly involved assume that she died.
People who know the resident well have not seen her since the fire. She had been at odds with her landlord for some time, who wanted her out of the house he had built above a barn behind his house. The landlord says he last saw her on Sunday night but heard rumblings in her shed on Monday night.
Her ex-boyfriend who was present at the house on Wednesday also assumes that the woman died in the fire. The body that was found after the fire was in the shed. On Wednesday afternoon, forensic investigators were at work in and around the buildings affected by the fire. Sources related to the investigation say that it is assumed that the deceased is indeed the resident. Due to the ferocity of the fire, official identification can be complicated.
Hole in the ceiling
A number of local residents were not allowed to bring home last night. A few did come to De Wiltstraat on Wednesday. Tamara Owl of number 19 next to the building where the remains were found was allowed to enter her home this morning. “There is a hole in the ceiling that the fire brigade had to make to fight the fire and lamps have fallen down. There is a lot of water damage.” She has been told that she is not allowed to enter for the time being. “I would like an indication of how long it will take. I have been told that I have to turn to the municipality for this.”
The fire may have started at a barn with a living space on top. Local residents have previously complained to the municipality about nuisance in and around that building. Mayor Ahmed Marcouch writes in a letter that violations had indeed been observed there and enforcement action had been taken ‘including administrative coercion for which proceedings are pending’. He thanks the emergency services and the entrepreneurs in the area who have taken care of the people affected by the fire. “All help and involvement have been of great value in this tragic event.”
