The “liturgy” of the appointments of the Federal Executive of the PSOE was repeated this Saturday at the Federal Congress that the party is holding in Seville. That is, round of meetings Pedro Sanchez with their general secretaries and late night phone calls. The complete list was not known until almost 2:00 pm from Saturday to Sunday.
An uncertainty that is common in socialist conclaves but that in the case of this weekend has left little room for surprises. The leader of the socialists has clearly opted for continuity, for closing ranks and shielding his main leaders. These are both Maria Jesus Monterowho will continue as deputy secretary general, as Santos CerdanSecretary of Organization. An Executive for “hard times” because Ferraz believes that now is not the time for “experiments.”
The continuity of both was already taken for granted during the days prior to the Federal Congress. The signs were also confirmed during the first stages of the event. Cerdán has been involved this last year in the negotiations with Junts and Carles Puigdemont himself. Montero has recently carried out a very complex tax reform that was on the verge of foundering.
Furthermore, the first has been accused of Victor Aldama of receiving envelopes with money, like Carlos Moreno, Montero’s chief of staff. Due to these statements, the socialists have initiated legal actions and both are directly involved in the joint lawsuit for insults and slander.
The main and most striking novelty is the inclusion of Pilar Bernabe as Secretary of Equality, a position that is considered number four. The current Government delegate in the Valencian Country replaces the Minister of Equality Ana Redondo. Bernabé has gained a lot of prominence over the last month due to the management of DANA, she sounds like a future candidate for the Mayor of Valencia and is considered “a woman with a lot of knowledge of the party.”
Redondo’s departure is interpreted, according to the sources consulted by Publiclike a disavowal of his internal work in the PSOE. It would not have to do with possible movements in Castilla y León. Management sources highlight that it has not been characterized by its involvement in stopping some debates that were already over, such as the issues of the rights of trans people.
In fact, these same sources point out that their inaction has caused situations such as those experienced this Saturday in Seville, where the current of so-called “classical feminism” won an amendment to leave out the acronym LGTBIQ+ and another to veto the participation of people of the “sex male” in sports competitions for women.
Territorial key messages
The preparation of the Executive also sends some messages in a territorial key in view of the upcoming primary processes that the party will have to address next. In Madrid, for example, two people who once competed against the resigned have been included in the leadership Juan Lobato.
This is the mayor of Fuenlabrada, Javier Ayala, as secretary of Cities and Metropolitan Areas; Enma Lopezcouncilor in the Madrid City Council as secretary of Economic Policy and Digital Transformation.
In Castilla y León, the inclusion of the deputy for León draws attention Javier Alfonso Cendón, as Secretary of Science, Innovation and Universities. The new leader has been one of the most critical of Luis Tudancacurrent general secretary of the PSOE in Castilla y León, whom many voices in Ferraz consider amortized and even more so after the fight he tried to make over the primary calendar.
Another output that is also interpreted in an internal key is that of Pedro Casaresdeputy for Cantabria. This surprised with an alternative list of delegates to the one headed by the current secretary general Pablo Zuloaga.
The presence of leaders from Castilla-La Mancha, one of the federations most critical of Sánchez for the positions of Emiliano García-Pageis limited precisely to two of the people most politically distanced from Page. They are the Minister of Housing Isabel Rodriguez and the Government delegate in the region Miracles Toulon.
A similar situation occurs with the entry from Aragon of Manuela Berges, the new secretary of Social Policies, Seniors and Associations. His profile is close to Pilar Alegría, who aspires, although not yet decided, to succeed Javier Lambánanother of the leaders critical of Sánchez.
For the rest, in other representative positions such as the presidency of the party, Cristina Narbona. In the Executive spokesperson’s office he will continue Esther Penaeven though it had been questioned. The ministers who were already in the leadership, except Diana Morant and the aforementioned Redondo, maintain their positions.
