The day arrived. Starting this Friday, Seville hosts the 41st Federal Congress of the PSOE. A conclave that will re-elect Pedro Sanchez as general secretary of the socialists and who, as he himself said, intends to “renew the teams and the discourse” of the party. Regardless of what happens this weekend in the Andalusian city, the reality is that the meeting comes at a complex moment.
On the one hand, the consequences of DANA and the subsequent management on which the Government has been focused, have taken a lot of focus away from Congress during the previous weeks. On the other hand, the judicial offensive against the Executive and Sánchez’s relatives, with several open fronts, has focused the political debate in recent days. Furthermore, the name of Juan Lobato will resonate, despite not attending Seville, in the conversations of the socialists.
The resignation of the former Secretary General of the PSOE of Madrid has partly avoided a major problem for the socialists. His attendance at the Federal Congress, according to several sources consulted, would surely have generated obvious discomfort and evident tensions. But his statement this Friday before the Supreme Court (TS) and what may come out of it cannot be avoided in conversations, both public and private.
The Madrid delegation, which will now lead Isaura Leal As president of the management company, she will have quite a few spotlights on her. The imminent candidacy of Óscar López will most likely be another topic of conversation in the leaders’ circles. Especially taking into account that, barring unexpected changes, the primaries will begin with the presentation of pre-candidacies next week.
Organic life will have its next episode after Seville with the beginning of the regional congresses. In some territories, leadership renewals and perhaps competitions in primaries, as is the case of Castilla y León, with Luis Tudanca questioned in Ferraz, or Andalusia, where critics of Juan Espadas have recently mobilized.
“Foot on wall”
The ‘Koldo case’, the accusations of Victor De Aldamathe cases against Sánchez’s brother and wife are added to the matter related to Lobato, the State Attorney General and the partner of Isabel Díaz Ayuso. Moncloa was especially blunt this Thursday with the case that affects David Sánchez. “Suspicious similarities” are seen in the Government with the case against Begoña Gómez. False information dismantled by the UCO and some ultra whistleblowers are the backbone of both, as the Executive recalls.
Publicly, the socialists do not finish directly confronting the judicial offensive they suffer. They reiterate that they have the “maximum respect” for judicial procedures. But privately they are aware that “there are no coincidences” in the judicial “maneuvers” and, especially, on “conveniently chosen” dates. Faced with this, as a socialist leader points out, the objective is to “put our foot on the wall” and close ranks with Sánchez.
Revealing, in this sense, was the intervention of Pepe Alvarezgeneral secretary of UGT, in front of Sánchez last Tuesday. “We have to be fully aware that there is a new way of doing politics. Our Portuguese friends have suffered it and we have to defend this Government, which is democratic, legitimate and is the one that has to continue working to achieve the objectives,” he said. .
In the PSOE they say they are “calm” because “there is nothing” in these matters. They are especially harsh with Aldama’s accusations, which were already forcefully denied last week by both Sánchez himself and Santos CerdanSecretary of Organization and one of the people mentioned.
“Confessed criminals are setting the political agenda of our country without providing a single piece of evidence in court, thanks to Alberto Núñez Feijóo. It is intolerable,” they lament in a PSOE that has already initiated legal action against the businessman behind the plot.
