The Russian secret services want to penetrate the Baltics, warn the authorities there. Estonia and Latvia are now drawing conclusions: a churchman has to leave the country.
Estland and Latvia are taking action against Russian citizens living in their country who the authorities say pose a security risk. A few days ago, a senior Estonian border guard official said they would not extend the residency permit for the Orthodox church leader, Metropolitan (Bishop) Yevgeny, which expires on February 6. The cleric sent from Russia to Estonia in 2018 “supported the aggressor (Russia) in public actions and statements, and he has not changed his behavior despite previous warnings.”
According to his own statements, the church leader made his stance “against war” clear soon after Russia’s attack on Ukraine. The Metropolitan said that he also did not share the view of his superior, Moscow Patriarch Kirill I, that Russian soldiers who died in the war in Ukraine had been cleansed of their sins.
