DAccording to a comrade-in-arms, the imprisoned Kremlin critic Alexei Navalnyj has been taken to an unknown location. His lawyer was informed in the prison camp where the opposition politician was previously detained that “there is no such prisoner,” wrote Navalnyj’s colleague Leonid Volkov on Telegram on Tuesday. “We do not know where Alexei is now and to which camp he is being taken.” The Reuters news agency initially had no statement from the responsible Russian authorities.
The 45-year-old opposition politician has been serving his eleven-and-a-half-year sentence in a prison camp in Pokrov, 119 km east of Moscow. Despite his imprisonment, Navalny has repeatedly called for protests against the Russian invasion of Ukraine. The authorities in Russia describe Navalnyj and his comrades-in-arms as enemies of the state who wanted to destabilize Russia with the support of the West.
Navalnyj was arrested in January 2021 when he returned home from Germany and convicted of violating probation conditions. He collapsed on a domestic Russian flight in August 2020. First he was treated in Russia, then transferred to the Berlin Charité. There, poisoning with a nerve agent was determined. The government in Moscow has denied allegations that Russian authorities tried to kill President Putin’s opponent.
