The French brand Renault it really wants to aim high on environmental issues, and it rightly wants to couple them with industrial and budgetary goals. The big business of component recycling and battery reconditioning, according to Losanga, it could raise € 1 billion a year by 2030, if well done.
The center of this new ‘system’ based on the circular economy is in Flins, near Paris. But it will also be done elsewhere, for example in Spain, in Seville. It’s called model ‘Refactory‘, and the managing director Luca De Meo really believes in it very much. The first activities will already generate 200 million euros in turnover from 2025. There are many initiatives that will be introduced to perfect the work system.
For example, a fully digital refurbishment program reduced the time to prepare a used car for resale from 21 to 8 days. The activities are organized in four groups, but to date only one is fully operational (reconditioning of used cars).
RE-TROFIT: This center brings together the retrofit and reconditioning activities of used vehicles. Operational since September 2021, Factory VO has already reconditioned over 1,500 vehicles. Over the next two years, it is planned to increase its capabilities and add new activities, such as heavy-duty body repair. By 2023, a project to offer retrofit services to convert commercial vehicles will also be under consideration.
RE-ENERGY: this center contributes to the development of applications related to the second life of batteries and new energies. With the development of electric mobility, Gaia, a subsidiary of the Group specializing in battery repair, is preparing to change scale: by the end of 2021, 2,000 battery repairs will be carried out and by 2030 they will increase to more than 20,000. In coordination with Mobilize, the Flins site hosted in 2021 a stationary energy storage device starting from batteries, with a capacity of 15 MWh (Advanced Battery Storage project). The development of mobile or stationary energy storage systems for multiple uses (construction sites, solar energy storage, services on board ships, etc.) will reach a capacity of 30 MWh in 2021 and 2022. Under the joint- Hyvia venture, dedicated to hydrogen mobility, the Flins site will also host, starting from 2022, the activities of assembly of fuel cells, charging stations and supply of hydrogen.
RE-CYCLE: this center brings together the activities of recycling and reusing components and materials. The gradual arrival, between 2021 and 2022, of the teams from the Choisy-le-Roi plant, experts in the remanufacturing of mechanical components, will allow to maximize the use of spare parts and reused parts in the Factory VO and in the Group. It was also planned to extend the strategic activity of repairing electronic boards (mechanotronics) as part of this transfer of activities. The center continues to implement short cycles for the recycling of materials and components, such as catalytic converters and fenders.
RE-START: this center includes the design of an innovation and training center. It brings together 3 entities: an innovation center at the service of industry 4.0 to develop, in particular, prototyping, 3D printing, robot retrofit; a commercial vehicle prototyping activity as well as a campus where professional training courses with diplomas are held for Flins employees. In early 2022, this center will also include an incubator dedicated to research and innovation at the circular economy level, as well as new academic training to obtain certifications, with the support of the region.
