Airbus and Groupe Renault, world leaders in the aerospace and automotive industries, have signed a research and development agreement to strengthen transversality and synergies and respond to the electrification needs of both companies, improving their respective product ranges. This partnership, which will allow Airbus to mature technologies for future hybrid-electric aircraft, will be presented in detail at the Airbus Summit, which will be held on 30 November and 1 December.
As part of this partnership, the engineering teams of Airbus and Groupe Renault they will join forces to advance technologies related to energy storage, which is still one of the main obstacles to the autonomy of electric vehicles. The collaboration will mainly build on the technological blocks related to optimizing energy management and reducing battery weight and will allow to study the best options for doubling the energy density of batteries by 2030. passing from the current chemical cells (advanced lithium-ion) to fully solid-state drives. The collaboration will also focus on the complete life cycle of future batteries, from production to recyclability, to prepare for the industrialization of these future battery designs while assessing their carbon footprint throughout the life cycle.
“For the first time, two European leaders from different sectors share technical knowledge to shape the future of hybrid-electric aircraft – said Gilles Le Borgne, Engineering Director of Groupe Renault – The aviation sector is extremely demanding in terms of safety and energy consumption, just like the automotive industry. As Group Renault, our 10 years of experience in the electric vehicle value chain allow us to count on one of the best field expertise there is, but also on a real expertise in the performance of battery management systems. Driven by the same ambitious goal of innovating and reducing the carbon footprint, our engineering teams work together with those of Airbus to converge cross-cutting technologies that will make it possible to operate hybrid aircraft, but also to develop the vehicles of the future”.
Technological trends go in the same direction. The collaboration between Airbus and Groupe Renault on electrification will play an important role in changing the world of transport, successfully contributing to the ambitious goal of net zero emissions by 2050, in both the automotive and aviation sectors. “This cross-sector partnership with Groupe Renault will help us bring out the next generation of batteries in Airbus’ electrification roadmap.” explained Sabine Klauke, Director of Engineering at Airbus – “Achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2050 is a unique challenge that requires collaboration across sectors, starting today. By combining Groupe Renault’s experience in electric vehicles with our own achievements in electric flight demonstrators, we will be able to accelerate the development of the breakthrough technologies required for future hybrid aircraft architectures in 2030 and beyond. This will also foster the emergence of common technical and regulatory standards to underpin the clean mobility solutions needed to meet our climate goals.”
