Mobility, motorsport and aeronautics are the 'fields' of use
Red Bull Advanced Technologiesthe high-performance division of the Red Bull Racing Group, is collaborating with the mobility technology company AVL to develop the next generation of ultra-high power density fuel cells that are expected to be two-thirds lighter than conventional fuel cell systems, thus paving the way for zero carbon emissions in the high-performance automotive, motorsport and aviation sectors .
This collaboration combines AVL PEM (proton exchange membrane fuel cell) fuel cell technologies with Red Bull's award-winning technologies and innovative methodologies in design, construction and lightweight aerodynamics. The project includes the building a fuel cell system for high-performance applications that surpasses those currently available globally. The joint research indicates that significant improvements in gravimetric power density can be achieved, with values towards 6kW/kg at the stack level and 2kW/kg at the fuel cell system level. This technology has the potential to produce the PEM fuel cell system with the highest gravimetric power density in the world.
The solutions that will be created will constitute a significant milestone in zero-carbon technological innovation, enabling sectors such as aerospace, future motorsport series and a multitude of other maximum load applications to have the power density values required by hydrogen mobility.
Rob Gray, technical director of Red Bull Advanced Technologies, said: “We are pleased to work with AVL on this collaboration to increase the power density of fuel cells and therefore improve performance. This shows how beneficial it can be the application of cutting-edge F1-inspired engineering to solve real-world problems“.
Matthias Wellersmanaging director of AVL Powertrain UK Ltd: “This exciting collaboration will combine the knowledge and experience of our experts, enabling PEM fuel cell system technology to advance further and more rapidly to meet the requirements of high-performance applications“.
