KCan a man complete an Ironman triathlon in less than seven hours? A woman in less than eight hours? 3.8 km swimming, 180 km cycling, 42.195 km running? The answer is: no. Not in the foreseeable future. This Sunday (or on the alternative date, Monday) the Sub7/Sub8 project at the Lausitzring wants to prove the opposite, albeit with a few rule changes.
The Swedish Olympic champion and Ironman world champion Kristian Blummenfeldt and the Brit Joe Skipper will start, in the women’s race Olympic champion Nicola Spirig from Switzerland and Kat Matthews from Great Britain, runner-up at the Ironman World Championships in Utah in early May. So that they all have a chance to break the sound barrier, the organizers have suspended the slipstream ban on the bike course and thus a central Ironman rule. More than that: The athletes can nominate ten pacemakers each and use them as required, for swimming, cycling and running.
