Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday called on Russians to develop artificial intelligence tools for their country.
He said Russia needed to use its own tools to compete with “biased” Western chatbots.
The race to develop artificial intelligence programs has heated up since the launch of the generative chatbot “ChatGPT” last year, prompting Russia and China to spend billions to compete with American dominance in this field.
“I think you are well aware that some Western search engines, as well as some generative models, often work in a highly selective and biased way,” Putin said at an artificial intelligence conference in the Russian capital, Moscow.
He added, “They do not take into account Russian culture, and sometimes they simply ignore and cancel it… Many modern systems are trained based on Western data and are intended for the Western market.”
The Russian President warned that “the monopolistic dominance of these foreign innovations in Russia is unacceptable, dangerous and unacceptable,” calling on Russia to be “at the forefront” in this field.
Putin has repeatedly called for an end to dependence on Western technology in Russia. In September, he ordered the government to allocate funds for the development of supercomputers and research into artificial intelligence.
The success of “GBT Chat” sparked the enthusiasm of major technology companies to enter this field, as Google was quick to launch its own chat program and investors allocated funds for all types of artificial intelligence programs.
