Bulgarian Prime Minister Nikolai Denkov speaks out against his country's politicians who see foregoing arms aid as a path to peace – and speaks about the danger of Russian attacks on ammunition factories.
Prime Minister, your government is supporting Ukraine with extensive deliveries of ammunition. However, Bulgaria's President Rumen Radev is against it. He often speaks as if the Kremlin's interests are closer to him than those of Bulgaria. Is Bulgaria's president a man of the West or Moscow?
It is not permissible for a head of government to comment on specific positions of the President. But I can explain how I myself understand Bulgaria's national interests. They lie in the fact that international law must be accepted by everyone and no one is allowed to invade a neighboring country with tanks and armed forces. It is of paramount importance to our government to help Ukraine restore the pre-war order. We have reinforced this stance by supplying armaments and humanitarian aid. Not only Bulgaria's president, but also some of our opposition leaders claim that the best path to peace is to stop supplying weapons to Ukraine. But it is obvious that Russia would then win the war. From the statements of Russian leaders it can be concluded that the Kremlin will plan further invasions after this. It is easy to see the major risks this would pose for Bulgaria. A Russian victory in Ukraine is not in Bulgaria's national interest.
