Portuguese deputy André Ventura, leader of the right-wing Chega party, which has recently consolidated itself as the third largest force in the Portuguese Parliament, criticized the Brazilian government this Friday (10) because of the tragedy that is occurring in the south of country, due to the floods that occur in the state of Rio Grande do Sul.
Ventura, through a video post made on his X (formerly Twitter) profile, said that the Brazilian government, led by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT), is trying to “hide the great tragedy that many Brazilians” are living in the south of the country right now.
“The Brazilian government is trying to hide the great tragedy that many Brazilians are experiencing, especially in Rio Grande do Sul”, says Ventura in the publication.
In the video, Ventura states that Portugal prepared 120 tons of material to be sent to Brazil and serve as support and aid to Brazilians affected by the floods in Rio Grande do Sul.
The parliamentarian mentioned that initially there were 150 tons of material available. However, so far approximately 30 tons of this material have ended up spoiling due to the delay in delivery.
“We have 120 tons of support, of support material, ready to be delivered to our Brazilian companions. And the help doesn’t leave Portugal. It is ready, it is available, it will largely spoil if it is not delivered. But the Brazilian government doesn’t want Portugal to send it for one reason: to hide what has been its failure. TAP [TAP Air Portugal, companhia aérea] He has already made himself available to send things, we are just waiting for someone to do something”, says Ventura in the video.
“The Brazilian government is trying to hide what is happening. It is trying to avoid international aid, it is trying to support people internally so as not to recognize its failure and we cannot allow that to happen”, says the parliamentarian.
“I urge the Portuguese government and the Brazilian government to accept this help, which will be essential to save lives, to help families, many of them children, babies and whom we cannot turn away. This is my appeal, I hope everyone understands that politics cannot be above people”, says Ventura.
In the publication, Ventura did not detail which materials are part of this aid. A People’s Gazette asked the Brazilian government for answers regarding the accusation of the Portuguese parliamentarian. However, until the publication of this article, the government did not comment on the statements. The space remains open and will be updated as soon as there is a response.
