Four people were killed and at least 35 others were injured after a tornado struck the Midwest region of the United States, according to authorities in Iowa.
The tornado touched down in the town of Greenfield, southwest of Des Moines, on Tuesday afternoon, the Iowa Department of Public Safety said in a statement. “The number of those infected is likely higher, but these numbers only reflect the number of those treated for their injuries at designated alternative care sites,” the statement said.
The National Weather Service in Des Moines put the hurricane’s intensity at EF3- on the Fujita scale, which ranges from 0 to 5, which measures the severity of a hurricane based on the amount of damage it caused.
“Additional damage assessments will continue over the next few days and results may change. Additional hurricane paths and classifications will be added as data collection continues,” the agency said in a post on the social media platform X.
White House spokeswoman Karine Jean-Pierre said that Federal Emergency Management Agency Administrator Dean Criswell will travel to Iowa on Thursday “to meet with local officials and affected residents and to inspect the damage.”
