There is something for everyone on the MotoGP grid when it comes to off-track training strategies, and this is even more evident during the winter, when riders spend more time away from racing. For example, Alex Rins and Maverick Vinales combine motocross and supermoto sessions with days on Superbike bikes on tracks like Montmelo, Valencia or Almeria, just to name three of the most used tracks.
Already some time ago, Fabio Quartararo had told Motorsport.com that he did not want to abuse sports bikes so as not to take too many vices that could then affect him when he gets on the MotoGP prototype. For this reason, he only runs a day or two in the week before the preseason tests, mostly to get familiar with speed again.
There are others, such as Pol Espargaro, who for years had based their physical preparation on training focused on strength, muscle building and cardio sessions, especially running in the mountains from Andorra, where he resides. However, the Catalan changed his training habits this winter, focusing more on the bike after seeing that the method he had implemented up to that point required an update after joining Honda. “Being on the team with Marquez allows me to understand a little better the techniques he uses to go so fast. Now I understand why he trains a certain way and does what he does ”, he commented recently to the author of this piece.
“In recent years, at KTM, my way of working during the winter was different. I did little in motion, did little cardio and a lot more muscle work. Last winter I already did more motocross, and this winter I intensify the days of flat track. Seeing how Marc works, I think this can help me a lot, ”adds the Spaniard. “I’m also lucky enough to have a RC213V-S, which is a kind of mini-MotoGP”, remembers Espargaro, who is currently training in Portimao, where he traveled with his sporty Honda to go to the track and with the supermotard, as he himself shows on his social channels.
