The Philippine President Duterte has surprisingly announced his withdrawal from politics. Even his daughter might not have known about the move.
Manila – He was a real surprise. The Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte announced over the weekend that he would not run for the office of Vice President in the upcoming election on May 9, 2022. This was a “violation of the constitution,” he said on Saturday.
The announced withdrawal of Duterte from politics is boiling up the rumor mill. The ruling party PDP-Laban has not yet chosen a presidential candidate, but Duterte’s daughter Sara is already being traded as a possible candidate. She may not have been informed about her father’s move, because on the same day the 43-year-old announced that she would be registered for re-election as mayor of the megacity of Davao in the south of the Southeast Asian island state.
President Duterte withdraws from politics: daughter Sara does not want to rule with her father
According to the constitution, the President of the Philippines can only rule for one term. Duterte had therefore announced in August that he would apply as Vice President in order to be able to continue the “crusade” against drug traffickers and insurgents that he had proclaimed. However, his popular daughter Sara has announced that she will not run if her father wants to run for the vice presidency.
the dpa reports that Sara Duterte now has until November 15 to switch to running for president. To do this, however, it would either have to set up its regional party “Hugpong ng Pagbabago” nationally or become a member of the ruling party.
Presidential elections in the Philippines in 2022: colorful personalities strive for the highest office
Should Sara Duterte really run for election, she could face an illustrious host of competitors. Ex-boxing world champion and Senator Manny Pacquiao officially submitted his application for president in the 2022 election on Friday. According to observers, Isko Moreno, the mayor of Manila, and the former police chief Panfilo Lacson could follow next week. Vice-President Leni Robredo and Ferdinand Marcos Jr., the son of the ex-dictator of the same name, are also trusted to enter the race for president.
President Duterte is internationally criticized primarily for his campaign against drug-related crime, which allegedly killed tens of thousands of people. The Hague International Criminal Court recently gave Chief Prosecutor Karim Khan the go-ahead for an official investigation against the Philippines. Analysts believe that Sara Duterte would protect her father from prosecution if she was elected president.
