L’Audi RS Q e-tron is a car specifically designed to compete in complex races such as the Dakar. Thanks to its 3 electric motors and a a heat engine that acts as a range extender, 680 horses are available to quickly take dunes and stony paths typical of desert races. At the Dakar 2022 the Audi team will be made up of a trio of very experienced and very strong drivers such as Carlos Sainz, Stéphane Peterhansel and Mattias Ekström.
The car, whose development also closely affects the road versions of the Ingolstadt brand in particular with regard to battery life, strength and performance, has been tested far and wide by the aforementioned drivers, and beyond all expectations in terms of result it took some time to ‘understand’ it and extract potential. As happens to many motorists who switch from endothermic to electric, Peterhansel also admitted that he is faced with a shocking technology.
“I never thought I’d take part in a Dakar with a car powered by electric motors. After so many tests I can say that driving this car is very fun and exciting, I did not imagine it would be possible. As a result, the idea of electric becoming popular in everyday driving is no longer that far off. With the RS Q e-tron, a great deal of power and torque are available to the rider at all times. No car with a classic combustion engine can deliver this kind of performance. Also, since there is no transmission, I don’t have to change anything and I can concentrate on driving style. I certainly haven’t gotten used to system acoustics yet: unlike the combustion engine, the energy converter with its rotational speed, which develops a certain sound, does not directly follow the throttle commands“Said Peterhansel.
The pilot also added that the development team has given priority to the reliability of the system, considering that at present a tenth more or less is not decisive.
