DMore than a thousand people have already been killed by the monsoon floods in Pakistan since June. The National Disaster Management Agency announced on Sunday that 119 people had died in the past 24 hours alone. The total number of fatalities rose to 1033.
According to the authorities, the floods caused by the annual monsoon have affected more than 33 million people – one in seven people in Pakistan. Almost a million homes were destroyed or badly damaged.
The monsoon, with its immense rainfall, usually lasts from June to September. It plays an extremely important role in agriculture and water supplies, but it also causes devastating floods and devastation time and again.
The worst floods in recent history occurred in 2010. At that time, around a fifth of the country was flooded; almost 2000 people lost their lives. Around 20 million were left homeless.
Pakistan is particularly vulnerable to climate change. According to the German development and environmental organization Germanwatch, it is the eighth country most threatened by extreme weather events.
