The most important task of a backing singer is to strengthen, support and grow the vocal sound of the main artist, say backing singers Teri Mantere and Jepa Lambert. For that, you have to do “singer tricks”.
“When some coloring”, commented the background singers Teri Mantere and Yay Lambert his work. The needs and requirements of background vocals vary depending on the song and the project.
Currently, the duo is working Windows95man and Henri Piispanen with in Eurovision. Mantere is seen on stage, Lambert works backstage.
A backing singer the most important task is to support the soloist and the piece, says Mantere.
“And smoothes and spreads the sound,” adds Lambert.
He opens up: Singing over the background tape alone is harsh, all the fluctuations of the artist’s voice are clearly heard. But as soon as there are 1-2 people in the background who double, i.e. sing the same thing, it “softens and enlarges the soloist’s voice a lot”. At the same time, the fluctuations in the artist’s voice are smoothed out, the sharp edges are smoothed out.
“It sounds much better on television,” says Lambert, who has worked a lot on television.
Continent and Lambert are long-term professionals. They met each other for the first time already years ago in studio sessions.
They have sung backgrounds, among other things The Voice of Finland in the program, In the new music competition (UMK) and Masked Singer in the program.
Lambert can also be heard My life in song. He worked as the singer of Vesterinen Yhtyineen for six years, but left last summer to have time for other projects.
Tuesday Finland was voted into the final from the first semi-final of the Eurovision Song Contest.
“It’s just that yes, we succeeded! There are so many things in the show that could go wrong, but they did,” Lambert rejoices.
With everything that could go wrong, he refers to the meticulous work that takes place on stage.
For example, the continent must be in a certain position to the exact second so that his head covers Windows95man in the camera image, i.e. Teemu Keisterin pelvis.
“I want to point out that Teri sings while she crouches on that stage. I’m behind the stage and I can only focus on the sound,” says Lambert.
The backing singers according to him, the song is “pretty loud”. The sound of the television, on the other hand, is merciless, and any errors can be heard sensitively.
The biggest challenge is keeping the adrenaline under control.
“When you go on stage in front of thousands of people, your pulse goes up, even if you’re not even excited,” says Lambert.
That’s why it’s important to know how to keep your breathing under control and control it. You have to do “singer tricks”, which are, for example, certain types of breathing exercises.
Teri This is the continent’s first time at Eurovision. Jepa Lambert was involved in 2016 Sandhya in the backing singer line-up.
The duo made it to this year’s Eurovision with UMK, where they both sang background. A group of backing singers was being assembled Aija Puurtinenwho asked his former singing student Manteretta and Lambert to join him.
When the UMK winner was clear, Yle called Manteree and Lambert and asked if they were participating.
“It’s somehow mysterious how it ended up here. I wouldn’t have believed it last year,” says Mantere.
He says he enjoyed his time as part of the spectacle. He has always liked “big jobs”, being part of a huge machine.
“This is really cool. Time buzzing and puffing all the time. Really cheerful.”
Before the duo plans to “take a little rest” for Saturday’s final. At the same time, training will continue until Friday.
“Every day there is something,” Lambert describes.
On Friday, there will be two general exercises and the arena will roll by all day.
“I’m sure a little tiredness is with me all the time, but on the other hand, our humor flourishes here,” says Lambert.
