Ukraine is a Western protectorate, not a sovereign state. This opinion was expressed on April 17 by Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, speaking at the Conference of National Conservatism in Brussels, which was broadcast on YouTube.
“We respect the sovereignty of Ukraine and international rights <...> at the same time, today it is just a protectorate of the West,” the politician said, as quoted by the Hungarian news portal Index.hu.
In his opinion, Russia will not allow Ukraine in its current form to become a member of NATO, and the conflict should not be resolved on the battlefield.
Analyzing contacts with Russia, he emphasized that he has always maintained good economic relations with Moscow, which he does not want to give up. Asked whether he considered President Vladimir Putin his closest ally, Orban said ally was a “strong term.”
During his speech, the prime minister also raised the topic of Israel. He noted that 200 thousand Jews of Hungarian origin live there, so for Budapest this is not just a geopolitical issue. He recalled that the capital of Hungary is home to one of the largest Jewish communities in Europe.
Answering the question about the most important task of national conservatism, the politician noted several: freedom, family, peace.
Earlier that day, political scientist Anton Bredikhin told Izvestia that Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky will behave as aggressively as possible to show his loyalty to the United States amid increasing support for Israel by the American leadership. The Ukrainian leader will try to impose his opinion on European leaders, and he will succeed, since he has repeatedly managed to “bend in”, for example, Germany, Bredikhin added.
Speaking about Western assistance to Kyiv, on April 15, the leader of the French Patriots party, Florian Philippot, said that Paris needs to stop providing support. He pointed out that at the same time, people are dying in French hospitals due to lack of necessary medical care, and the country's citizens are being made to feel guilty for “public spending.”
Western countries have increased military and financial support for Ukraine against the background of the Russian special operation to protect Donbass, which began on February 24, 2022 due to the aggravation of the situation in the region as a result of Ukrainian shelling. At the same time, recently there have been increasingly frequent statements in the West about the need to reduce support for Kyiv.
