Delays, problems with payments to suppliers and a reduction in contributions for suppliers? No problem, the salary to be cut is mine. Maybe it didn’t go exactly like this but the gist is this: Makoto Uchida, CEO of Nissan, returned 30% of his salary for the month of April after the Japanese antitrust had criticized the Japanese brand for having reduced payments to its supplier chain.
Uccida’s salary
Uchida’s announcement triggered an investigation by a committee which also started some talks with Nissan employees and which subsequently plans to hear from the suppliers themselves. As reported by Automotive News, Makoto Uchida earns a salary of approximately 673 million yen ($4.3 million) per year. Meanwhile, Nissan has committed itself to establishing a dedicated line to respond to companies that work as partners on the topic of payments.
Nissan’s action
The Japan Fair Trade Commission took care of the Asian brand last March, for having cut payments to the main suppliers by around 3 billion yen between January 2021 and April last year. According to what Nissan claimed, however, the refunds to suppliers took place last January. The regulator then urged the brand to take action against future breaches, with training courses for employees. “The fact that our trading partners share concerns shows that we have not done enough to listen to their challenges,” Uchida said. “I take this matter seriously.” Nissan’s number one then explained that efforts will be intensified in recent weeks to present a specific plan by June.
