Netanyahu said in a recorded speech: “What is happening in American universities is horrific,” and accused “anti-Semitic mobs” of controlling prominent universities.
He added, “This is unreasonable. It must be stopped and condemned, condemned unequivocally… The reaction of a number of university presidents was shameful. Now, fortunately, the response of many federal, state and local officials has differed, but more must be done. We must do this.” Do more.”
Protests against Israel's actions in Gaza have escalated at American university campuses in the past few weeks as the Gaza war enters its seventh month.
Pro-Palestinian protesters called for a ceasefire and the divestment of their universities from companies with ties to Israel.
Universities published information about dozens of students without their consent, suspended them from studying, and police arrested some of them.
Some Jewish and Israeli students and faculty said the protests have turned campuses into a hostile environment in which they feel in danger.
Some of them observed an increase in anti-Semitism on campus. Some Jews also played a prominent role in anti-war protests, including groups such as Jewish Voice for Peace, which led some of the protests.
On October 7, Hamas launched an attack on towns in southern Israel, killing 1,200 people and taking 253 hostages to Gaza, according to Israeli statistics.
Since then, Israel has killed more than 34,000 Palestinians in its ongoing attack on the besieged Gaza Strip, with fears of thousands of bodies buried under the rubble, according to Gaza authorities. The attack led to the destruction of a large part of the Strip, the displacement of most of its population of 2.3 million people, and causing a humanitarian crisis.
