Nature “It came a long way, and the flames were quite clear” – A fireball that fell across the sky was recorded on Lauri Rauhanen’s dashboard camera in Helsinki

Ursa’s service has recorded observations of fireworks from, for example, Oulu, Lappeenranta and Tampere.

Around On Monday evening, Finland made many observations of a bright fireball that fell across the sky.

Finns have published their findings, for example, in the astronomical association Ursa To the Ascendant service. Those who have seen the fireball have described it as even brighter than the full moon or Venus.

The fireball was widely seen all over Finland on Monday after eight in the evening. Observations from Oulu, Lappeenranta, Tampere and Helsinki, for example, have been recorded in the service. The northernmost observation is from Kemi.

Fireball has ignited on the Russian side of Kitee to the east and extinguished roughly at the height of northern Ladoga, says Jaakko Visuri From Ursa’s fireball team.

“Unfortunately, it looks like any pieces of the meteorite would have remained on the Russian side,” says Visuri.

He points out that the estimate is preliminary.

According to Visuri, such bright fireballs are quite rare sightings.

“It only becomes so bright once or twice a year. When you think about how many times you happen to see it with your own eyes, it’s rare. ”

Helsinki Lauri Rauhanen, 42, got a vision for the video by accident with his car’s dashboard camera. He was driving towards his home in Pakila, Helsinki and noticed a fireball at 20.02.

“I’ve never seen such a big one. It came a long way, and the flames were quite clear, ”Rauhanen describes.

According to Rauhanen, it seemed that the fireball would have been quite close, but there are observations from quite a wide area. He, too, tried to put his findings on Ursa’s Sky Watch, but the website had momentarily crashed.

“It was pretty blocked last night.”

Visuri confirms that the service crashed probably due to heavy traffic. According to him, “insanely many observations” have been made.

Gland has previously received one regular stellar flight for video with his dashboard camera.

“The camera is always on in that Tesla,” he says.

Rauhanen does not describe himself as an active astronomer, but says that he pays attention to the phenomena and is interested in them.

“This winter has been exceptional. There have been a lot of northern lights in Helsinki as well. ”
