After the defeat in the local elections on March 31st, the Erdogan government wants to take action against the pro-Kurdish government. The opposition party is threatened with a ban.
Ankara – In the Türkiye The pro-Kurdish opposition party Dem Parti is threatened with a ban. Justice Minister Yilmaz Tunc is calling on the party to “distance itself from terrorism,” otherwise there should be a party ban procedure against the pro-Kurdish party. “If you do not want to face such a trial, you should distance yourself from terrorism, reject terrorism and violence,” Tunc told the press on the sidelines of an event at the presidential palace on Tuesday.
Prohibition proceedings have already been opened against pro-Kurdish HDP
The minister also recalled that pro-Kurdish HDP, against which a ban procedure was previously opened. “The HDP had practices supporting terrorist organizations. Prohibition proceedings have been initiated. If the DEM party also undertakes activities to support terrorism, this would be inevitable. If she does not distance herself, the relevant authorities will intervene.”
The leader of the right-wing radical MHP, Devlet Bahceli, calls for not only a ban on the Dem Parti, but also a confiscation of the assets of the pro-Kurdish party's deputies “It is a debt of honor to history, to the ancestors, to the homeland and to the nation, that the dishonorable persons who cannot accept the Turkish flag will be immediately removed from citizenship, their property and assets will be confiscated,” Bahceli also announced on Tuesday. Bahceli and his MHP are partners of the President's government Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
Justice receives order to ban pro-Kurdish party
Protest comes from the dem party. It was said that the Turkish Justice Minister is probably the new Goebbels of the ruling AKP party. “We can clearly see that the ban proceedings against the HDP were not enough for them. They are now entrusting the judiciary with the process of banning the DEM party and trying to influence it,” said Gülistan Kilic, the deputy parliamentary group leader of the Dem Parti, at a press conference.
Straight after the defeat in the local elections on March 31st the government is trying to take tougher action against the pro-Kurdish party. “Not a day goes by when they don’t point the finger at us, especially after the elections,” Dem Parti co-leader Tuncer Bakirhan said in a party meeting on Wednesday. “Those who threaten our communities should know very well that our mayors, our administrations, our elected friends will never give in to these threats.” Nobody will bow to the threats, said Bakirhan.
Demand for a party ban is politically motivated
The co-chair of the Dem Parti representation in Germany, Leyla Imret, sees it similarly in an interview fr.de from IPPEN.MEDIA. The call for a ban on the pro-Kurdish party is obviously politically motivated. “If the intimidation does not work, the government's approach is aimed at expelling Turkey from politics through illegal party closures. “Technically speaking, there is no reason to file a lawsuit (for a party ban, editor's note). It is a party that has only recently started its political activities and is accused of terrorism,” said Imret. “There is a risk that a government that does not take the constitution seriously will submit an application for a ban to the Constitutional Court.”
Erdogan and his team were particularly defeated in the local elections AKP added. In the Kurdish metropolis, the High Electoral Council initially awarded the mayor's office to the AKP candidate, even though the Dem candidate received well over 50 percent of the vote. As well as the opposition party CHP had sided with the Dem Parti, the Kurdish politician from the Dem Parti was allowed to take office. (erpe)
