Last May, Motorsport.com reported that MotoGP promoter Dorna, recently acquired by Liberty Media, was promoting an initiative among the championship’s teams to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the World Championship, created in 1949, with special retro and vintage style liveries. This is an initiative already adopted by other categories, such as the NASCAR Cup in its Throwback Weekend in Darlington.
The Spanish company’s hope was that it would be a unique event, and that it would focus everything on the British Grand Prix. And in the end it will be like this, on the weekend from 2 to 4 August 2024, as MotoGP confirmed in a statement on Monday.
Thus, the World Championship will launch its special anniversary activities in an important place like Silverstone, where, for example, Formula 1 was born in 1950. “For the first time in the 75 years of history of the sport, all the bikes and riders on the grid will race at Silverstone with special and exclusive liveries, all with a touch of retro style,” they explained.
“Drawing inspiration from any chapter of their individual history, all 11 teams on the grid – including the five official teams – will race in their own special edition vintage paint,” the note continues, implying that the liveries will be part of each team’s history .
All these liveries will be revealed on Thursday 1st August, at a special pitlane event starting at 3pm (UK time), which will be broadcast live on television.
Each bike will be revealed in the pitlane “in front of the public, who will be able to attend the event for free if they have a ticket for Thursday”. MotoGP promises that this event will be just “the beginning”, as the retro styling will go beyond the bikes and will also feature on the BMW safety car and even podium celebrations, with further displays throughout the weekend.
It will be the first time that MotoGP launches an initiative of this type, which was originally scheduled for the next 2024 Grand Prix in Assen (28-30 June). However, the premier class structures have asked for more time to prepare everything, and therefore it will not be at the “Cathedral”, but on the British circuit.
