The 2022 season has not started as expected Pecco Bagnaia. The young Ducati star, judged by many as one of the main favorites to the world championship crown this season, also thanks to the splendid results obtained in the second half of last season, opened the first weekend of the year in Lusail on the wrong foot. In fact, Bagnaia did not go beyond the qualifying ninth positionresulting only in fourth Ducati on the grid, behind Martin and Bastianini – first and second at the start tomorrow – and his box mate Jack Miller, with the second bike of the factory team, which will start from the fourth place instead.
The ninth place today is part of a Friday equally full of problems for the Italian driver. Interviewed by Sky Sport MotoGP at the end of the session, Bagnaia recognized that there is still some way to go to get back to the level he had reached at the end of the 2021 World Cup. “Qualifying went badly, unfortunately – # 63 admitted bluntly – the fact of not being able to have the same bike for two test sessions penalized me. But this concerns me, when you are a rider of the official team you have so many things to try“.
“We found a configuration that I like in the fourth free practice – continued the centaur of Chivasso – but I did a few laps, I would have needed to do more. We must work, we are further behind than last year. I miss feeling, running consistently, even though we improved slowly in each session and in the end we set a good time. I tried a lot of tires in the fourth free practice, I liked the average a lot. In terms of race pace we are in better shape than in the single lap, we’ll see how it goes in the race “concluded Bagnaia.
