Pedro Acosta once again tasted the bitter side of MotoGP. The rookie in the premier class, who is shining in 2024, had just suffered his first major fall in the long race of the last French Grand Prix, when he was in fifth position and when he thought he had a bike to try to fight for victory. Things were looking good for him this weekend in Montmelò, after third place in the Sprint on Saturday. But on Sunday there was another setback.
The “Shark of Mazarrón” was the victim of another accident in the main race, in this case when he was in second position, chasing Jorge Martin, and seeking a victory that would be historic, the victory of the youngest rider in the premier class, who it would have allowed him to beat Marc Márquez’s record. But everything ended in nothing.
Acosta, who attracted attention before the start of the race by choosing the soft rear tyre, like Marc Marquez, Jack Miller and Alex Marquez, stressed that it was not a strategy “as risky as it seemed”, and that this was not the cause of the accident, for which he became angry, believing he had thrown another podium “in the garbage”.
“We had a problem with the front of the bike, but we’re not sure yet. At Le Mans and here I was able to be fast, to stay in front and to be fast on my own. Apart from the crashes, I think these were the two most competitive weekends. The bike was ready for the podium”, began the Spaniard
“The problem has nothing to do with the tyres. Already from the second lap I understood that there was something wrong. If I had been a little more cautious perhaps I wouldn’t have fallen”, he explained later, confirming that he was aware there was a problem.
Despite what happened, like Marquez, the GasGas Tech3 rider is fully convinced of his strategy, which he considers successful, despite Pecco Bagnaia winning on the medium tyre. “The soft tire was the winning option. That doesn’t mean I would have won. We threw another podium in the bin,” he continued.
Regarding the Italian, he explained that he was easy to chase and explained how he followed him in the early stages: “It was easy to follow Pecco. He didn’t close in front of me like yesterday. I took advantage of the left turns to get close to Pecco”, he said.
