In a 2024 truly full of great gaming innovations, there is also space for the return of some highly appreciated titles from the past. CAPCOM has decided to focus on the spin-off of one of its most beloved franchises thanks to MONSTER HUNTER STORIES Collection, a collection that will include the remastered version of the first chapter and a new edition of the second. I passed several hours in the company of both titles on PlayStation 5and in this article I decided to share with you my first impressions of this collection.
Climb aboard yours Monstie favorite and get ready for this first taste of MONSTER HUNTER STORIES Collection!
Without a doubt one of the most important elements of this collection is the remastered version of the first MONSTER HUNTER STORIES. Thanks to his artistic direction and the graphic improvements implemented the title, originally released on Nintendo 3DS in 2016, it manages to be widely appreciable even on the big TV screen. Despite not having made any changes to the gameplay, the game remains still very well structured today, and this new edition is truly perfect both for those who loved the original and for all those who haven’t had the opportunity to play it and want to recover it. Also for the first time we will have available dubbing in both Japanese and Englishand both are really very high quality.
One of the uniqueness of the title lies in its gameplay, which differs greatly from what has been seen in the main chapters of the franchise CAPCOM. In fact, this time we will take on the role of a Rider, no more than a hunter, and we will have to make friends with the many monsters present in the game. And if on one side the material collection system will remain intact to create increasingly powerful weapons and armor, on the other hand we will have a totally revolutionized combat system that we will immerse ourselves in turn-based battles in which we will have to try to overcome our opponents by exploiting their weaknesses and choosing the right moves in a Rock-Paper-Scissors style system.
The new edition of MONSTER HUNTER STORIES 2: Wings of Ruin it won’t be any less. By playing them consecutively it is in fact possible to see how, although maintaining the same basic gameplay as the first, the company has managed to expand it by introduce many new elements capable of making it more multifaceted. In battle we will now also have to take into account the weapon we are using, since most monsters will have weapons specific weaknesses that will vary based on their body part that we will attack. We will therefore have the possibility of equipping three types of different weapons and changing them at any time to make the most of the opponent’s weak points.
In my first few hours of playing with the version PlayStation I also didn’t notice any major technical problems with the title, the only small flaw concerns it light ambient pop ups for some elements like grass but this is a detail that could easily be fixed with a patch at launch. Furthermore, unlike the first chapter, in which all the DLC will already be included inside, this time the additional contents will be purchasable separately. The motivation, although it may be a little surprising, is quite simple. The game has been around for a few years now Nintendo Switch and PCthe only new version is that PlayStation 4 and the company has not introduced new elements compared to those already available on the market.
Personally I believe that the greatest strength of the collection is precisely this the fact that it contains both chapters of the spin-off. The two titles were in fact released about five years apart from each other and on two different platforms, which is why their main plots are not extremely related except for the return of several characters in the second chapter. And although this means that we can easily play them individually, the possibility of reliving them in chronological order will allow us to better appreciate all those nuances and remakes of the first chapter present in the second.
Ultimately my opinion at the moment MONSTER HUNTER STORIES Collection it’s really positive! From what I could see both titles in the collection they don’t have major problems on PlayStation 5and their gameplay remains still current and fun despite the years that have passed. Furthermore, it is undeniable that value for money of this collection, given that for the price of one we will have two games available that are truly rich in content and will keep us company for a long time. For now I’ve only had a small taste, but I can’t wait to be able to delve deeper into my opinion with you when I go to review them in their entirety.
MONSTER HUNTER STORIES Collection it will be available next time June 14th on PlayStation 4. On the same day it will be possible to purchase individually MONSTER HUNTER STORIES on PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch and PC And MONSTER HUNTER STORIES 2: Wings of Ruin on PlayStation 4.
