The Arctic has always been considered one of the most important regions for Russia from a military point of view. On Wednesday, February 16, military expert Vladislav Shurygin told Izvestiya, adding that the United States continues to consistently challenge and invade Russian zones of influence.
“The Arctic has always been considered one of the most important regions for us from a military point of view. From here, during the Cold War, the Americans planned to strike with cruise missiles and aircraft, in the Arctic zone they always had areas for deploying submarines, ”he said.
The expert also pointed to the economic component, emphasizing that this is the richest region that the Americans will not abandon. Therefore, after the completion of the events in Ukraine, one should expect manifestations of their activity in the North, Shurygin suggested.
“The Americans will take on the Arctic and will do everything consistently. First, we should expect violations of our state borders and the boundaries of fishing zones. All our claims will be threatened with sanctions, other NATO countries will be involved in the process. The procedure is known,” he concluded.
Earlier in the day, Russian Security Council Deputy Secretary Mikhail Popov said the United States was expanding its military presence in the Arctic and seeking to challenge Russia’s rights in the region. According to him, “the United States in the Arctic envisages expanding its military presence by deploying American destroyers with guided missile weapons in the Barents Sea.”
In addition, the United States is going to build three new heavy icebreakers by 2027, the deputy minister added.
In January, ex-Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ordzhonikidze said that there are many countries claiming this region, and these are not only the United States and its NATO allies, but also non-Arctic states. According to him, it is important to confirm the political line and one’s economic interests with a forceful presence.
