Consider it doneAlthough the Blackbird from The Hague likes to sit in her garden, she has only done so sporadically in recent years. As soon as she enjoys the sun for a while, she gets angry looks from her hangover Jamie. The animal has been under ‘house arrest’ for a few years because he gets medicine twice a day. She would like her cat to be able to go outside again without slipping out of the yard. But she needs a little help with that.
The 11-year-old tabby cat liked to go outside when it was still allowed. ,,It is a real doerak”, says his owner. ,,He loves to roam and climb. But he doesn’t know what time to be home for his medicines. It is not clear how his heart is doing without pills.”
End of story
Jamie has had to take a pill every twelve hours since he suddenly fell over in the bathroom five years ago. ,,He was standing on the sink, not much later I heard a bang and he was on the floor. I thought: that’s the end of the story. Fortunately, he came to and I went to the vet”, she says. “It is not entirely clear what happened. He was probably born with a heart defect. And all of a sudden it came to fruition.”
Without the pills his heart is racing and his blood pressure is way too high
That’s why he’s now on beta blockers. “These are the same drugs that are prescribed for humans. Only in a much lower dose,” she explains. “Without the pills, his heart is racing and his blood pressure is much too high. That’s why I don’t dare to let him out in case something happens.”
In the beginning it was not easy to keep the hangover inside. Jamie couldn’t believe his cat flap wouldn’t open anymore. “Sometimes he was really angry. But he seems to have resigned himself to it now. Nowadays he sleeps almost all day, I know thanks to working from home.”
cat proof
I think it would be nice to open the doors again after a day of work and enjoy my garden
That was different a few years ago. The tomcat loved to go on a mouse hunt. “He loved being outside. He would only come home every now and then to say hello and then he would go again. Compared to now it is a world of difference. Although that will also have to do with age,” she thinks. ,,But I grant him to sit with his nose in the sun and the wind.”
That is why she is looking for someone who can help her make her garden ‘cat-proof’. “There is a fence that is too low between my garden and that of the neighbors. Jamie jumps right up there. I would like it a little higher,” she says. “Of course I want to help, but I’m not super handy. So I could use some help to figure out how to approach this and implement it.”
throwing doors open
By raising her fences, she hopes to enjoy her garden again with Jamie. ,,I sometimes sit in the garden, but then I have to lock him up and then he sits in front of the window looking out. I think that’s sad. I’d rather walk to the beach. That’s close. But I think it would be nice to open the doors again after a day of work and enjoy my garden. I would like to do that again.”
