Verstappen, never in Mercedes
In Formula 1 the word “never” does not find its place in most cases. Lewis Hamilton's move to Ferrari, which arrived suddenly, and the hypothesis of a Red Bull without Chris Horner are just the latest examples of how in sport and motorsport everything can be turned around in a few hours. Even bonds that now seem indissoluble – like that of Max Verstappen in Red Bull – will end, and councilor Helmut Marko knows it. But one thing is (almost) certain: the three-time world champion will not go to Mercedes.
Marko's words
To those who say that Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff wants to make the move to Brackley attractive for the Dutchman, Marko replied: “Actually it's his job, he has to do everything he can to get the best drivers“, this is his comment to OE24.
“Max won't waver in the face of their offer, he has a good memory. Too much has happened in the past. Just think of Silverstone or the turmoil in Abu Dhabi in 2021. This is still a sore point, and I would exclude Max suddenly telling me that he will no longer drive for us“. Then, an inevitable sting to Wolff when he stated that no piece of paper could get in the way of their relationship: “But a contract with Ferrari yes…“.
Armored contract
In current F1 even contracts take on less value, because if there are exit clauses like those that allowed Hamilton to land in Maranello, one is never certain that a driver will be able to honor the agreement until the last year. Verstappen's contract lasts until 2028. And it is logical that a team like Red Bull protects itself to ensure that it has Super Max on the team for as long as possible.
