Lum is a well-known series of Japanese manga from the 80s, which over time has obtained its own space in the world of Japanese animation, and a certain success, probably also thanks to the iconic cast of bizarre and funny characters. Well, with a teaser trailer was announced in the past few hours, a new animated series for Lum which will likely be released in the course of 2022.
For those unfamiliar with the events of the manga, we are talking about a somewhat bizarre and almost parody story of Japanese society, as well as of the Western way of life in general. The protagonist of the events is precisely Lum a young woman “lass” belonging to the alien race of Oni.
One day the species of these creatures decides to attack the planet Earthbut before the decisive attack is launched, humanity is offered an opportunity in the form of a challenge that could save everyone. The somewhat bizarre challenge requires that a human individual chosen at random by a super computer, be able to get close to Lum and touch his “Horn” that she has in her hair.
To make things a little unequal, however, the misfortune that makes the burden of saving the human race fall into the clumsy hands of Ataru Moroboshi, a young boy as clumsy as ever and bad at relationships with the other sex.
Lum, as you can see from the teaser on the cover of this article, she has the appearance of an attractive girl, a factor that leads Ataru to commit even more embarrassing mistakes in a desperate attempt to “approach” to the young woman.
It is also a pity for Ataru (and for all humanity) that Lum also has the ability to fly, a factor that makes the approach process apparently impossible. The story then continues with the young man who has to strive to save the world and with the rest of the people who continually insult him for his inefficiency and with his parents who regret having brought him into the world for how clumsy he is.
This is only the introduction of a set of events that make absurd situations the main reason for being. However, the tones and references used are typical of the Japanese comedy of the 80s and 90s, with a somewhat outdated approach regarding the interaction with sexuality, and we are therefore quite curious to see how these delicate issues will be dealt with in this new iteration.
