Petista suggested a measure so that he does not have to “run after” the World Bank, but did not explain how this new institution could overlap with the already existing IDB (Inter-American Development Bank), chaired by Brazilian Ilan Goldfajn
The president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) spoke this Wednesday (April 17, 2024) about the creation of a bank just for South America, so that it does not have to “run after” of the World Bank. “We run after the World Bank all the time, we can create something of our own, that talks like us, that thinks like us”said the Chief Executive at the Brazil-Colombia Business Forum, in Bogotá, Colombia.
The PT member did not say, however, what the relationship between this new institution would be and the existing one. IDB (Inter-American Development Bank), which is currently chaired by the Brazilian Ilan Goldfajn, who headed the Central Bank of Brazil from 2016 to 2019.
According to Lula, Brazil must have the “initiative” to help with the growth of South America, as, despite being a poor country, it has the largest economy, population and production.
At the Business Forum, Lula reinforced his commitment to policies for sustainable development in the Amazon and to cooperation and integration between Brazil and Colombia.
The event was organized by Apex Brazil together with the group ProColombia and brought together around 300 businesspeople from both countries to discuss reindustrialization, productive integration, food security and infrastructure.
