This Monday, Luis Donaldo Colosio requested the release of Mario Aburto, the confessed murderer of his father, who was the PRI candidate for president in 1994. The only person detained for the assassination of Luis Donaldo Colosio Sr. has been in prison for 30 years. Now the current mayor of Monterrey for the Citizen Movement (MC) and candidate for senator has asked the president of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, “to put a final close to this matter” with a pardon for Aburto. A request that arrives while the Attorney General's Office (FGR) intends to reopen the case in the middle of the election year.
Colosio has been clear with the request he made to the press in Monterrey. “Appealing to the president's compassion, I would say that it is better to pardon Mario Aburto. “Let me put a final close to this matter and allow both my family and Mexico to heal,” Colosio requested.
The MC candidate for senator for Nuevo León has charged against the Mexican justice system. “May we begin a path towards reconciliation through forgiveness. But above all through respect for leaving this in the hands of another justice system. Because Mexican justice was obliged at the time and today what we want is to turn the page,” he explained.
The messages from the son of the former PRI candidate come after the National Human Rights Commission rejected the statements of the lawyer and former official of the entity Jesús González, which exonerated Aburto of the murder. The assassination of the candidate has also been relevant this Monday, when a judge has stopped the FGR's attempt to reopen the case. A new investigation could create media turbulence in the midst of the electoral campaign process towards the largest elections in the history of Mexico, on June 2.
Last October, the murderer received protection from a Collegiate Court that invalidated his 45-year sentence. The court stated that Aburto, who murdered Luis Donaldo Colosio during an electoral rally in Tijuana in 1994, should have been tried based on the Baja California Penal Code and not the Federal Code. The court demanded a new sentence, otherwise the convicted person will be released in 2024.
The president is the only power authorized to grant pardon to Colosio's murderer. The only accused, who was 23 years old when he shot the candidate's body, was arrested moments after the assassination and confessed to having a premeditated plan to commit the crime against the PRI member. A subsequent file clarified that Aburto retracted his version and assured that the police were the ones who forced him to plead guilty after being tortured.
