Half a century has already passed since a Spain about to bury Franco sang that well-known I’m loving you madly. 50 years since we met Carmela and Tinatwo modern gypsies who managed to conquer the country, with their mix of flamenco and rock, under the name of The Grecas.
In 1974 they published their first album, Gypsy Rockwhich sold 200,000 copies and catapulted them to fame. And that is precisely what Carmela, the only survivor of the duocelebrated with his children and nephews with a stellar comeback.
But he not only celebrates this anniversary, but also pays tribute in this way to his sister Tina, the other half of The Grecas that died tragically in 1995, after years of suffering from addiction to drugs and after having been diagnosed schizophrenia.
The origins of the legend
Carmela and Tina Muñoz spent their childhood in Argentinawhere they came into contact with American music, from the rock of Jimi Hendrix even jazz George Benson. These were the musical influences that were brought in the suitcase when They returned to Spain in 1970, with 16 and 13 years old.
This is how they began to perform in different tablaoswhere the producer would find them José Luis de Carlos and the composer Felipe Campuzano, with whom they teamed up to publish their first album Gypsy Rockwhere success appeared I’m loving you madly.
Were four albums published for the duo, which little by little was losing its shine from the beginning, until they finished dissolving in 1979. But the real problems They arrived in 1983when Tina was diagnosed with a paranoid schizophreniaaggravated by frequent consumption of drugs and alcohol.
Finally, after an attack on his sister During a crisis, he entered the prison of women from Yeserías and in several psychiatric clinicsfrom which he quickly fled. In 1995 he died in a reception center from Aranjuez, at 37 years of age, due to poor nutrition and the disease of AIDS that he had contracted.
Carmela, for her part, tried to resurrect the spirit of Las Grecas on several occasions with other singers, even with his sister’s first-born, but the thing didn’t work. And finally, he retired to the warmth of his home, where he has only recently left to honor his sister.
