Telecom companies VodafoneZiggo and KPN are removing their telephone stocks from branches in Amsterdam after a series of robberies. VodafoneZiggo reports Wednesday that “in a short time” several shops in the city have been robbed and that the stocks are therefore being removed “for security reasons”. Earlier in the day, the shop on Bijlmerplein was the target of an armed robbery.
KPN previously informed the ANP news agency that the store on the same square has also been the target of robberies on more than one occasion, so it has now also decided to remove all telephone stocks from Amsterdam stores. The companies have not disclosed how long they will implement the measure. “We hope it is a temporary measure,” said a KPN spokesperson. VodafoneZiggo says that it concerns “a certain time”.
Both companies state that customers can still buy phones in stores, but that they will be delivered to their home. “The safety of our employees and the customers who visit our stores is always paramount,” said VodafoneZiggo. The company says it has called in emergency services to help staff deal with the previous robberies.
