ANDSantander coach Jorge Luis Pinto will have his first experience as a coach in the promotion tournament. He does it to help one of his great loves, Unión Magdalena, to regain its place in the first division.
According to the criteria of
Pinto will replace Álvaro Hernández, who left the team after incredibly losing the option of reaching the final of the first semester in B: he depended on himself and a tie was enough for him to qualify.
However, Unión lost 2-1 to the already eliminated Cúcuta Deportivo and Llaneros, who depended on that result to advance, ended up beating Quindío 2-0 and are now playing the final against Orsomarso.
Jorge Luis Pinto will lead Unión Magdalena for the third time
It will be Pinto’s third stage as Unión coach. The first was between 1988 and 1989. After a first year in which the team finished in last place, The man from Santander was very close to getting the Samario team’s second star.
Unión Magdalena was vying for a place in the grand final, to which Junior and Millonarios were already qualified, in a playoff tie with Nacional, Medellín and América, when the Colombian championship was canceled after the murder of referee Álvaro Ortega, which occurred on November 15, 1989.
Pinto’s second stage as coach in Santa Marta was between 1994 and 1996, years in which the team did not have good performances.
Pinto had already been at Unión as physical trainer for coach Perfecto Rodríguez in another successful campaign, that of 1979. when the team reached the last date of the final quadrangle with a chance of being champion, but ended up losing 2-0 to América, which won its first title that year.

The 71-year-old from Santander also directed Millonarios in three stages (1984-85, 1998-99 and 2019), three at Santa Fe (1986, 1987 and 1991-93), two at Deportivo Cali (1990-91 and 2022). -23), two to Junior (2003-2004 and 2011), two to Cúcuta Deportivo (2006, when they became champion, and 2009) and one to Bucaramanga (2001).
He was also coach of the Colombian national teams, between 2007 and 2008; Costa Rica, where he led the team to the quarterfinals of the 2014 World Cup in Brazil; Honduras and Arab Emirates. In addition, he coached clubs in Peru, Costa Rica, Ecuador and Venezuela.
