The Italian Minister of Health said that his country will soon start a campaign to give people over the age of 60 a second booster dose of vaccines to prevent Covid-19, after it received approval from the European Union health agencies.
The European recommendation came after a new increase in the number of cases of the disease and the number of cases requiring admission to hospital across Europe, and it is expected that this recommendation will facilitate decisions to accelerate the pace of vaccination campaigns that have slowed in the past few months.
Italian Health Minister Roberto Speranza said the government had already given its approval to local administrations to start a second booster dose campaign after approval by the National Medicines Agency.
“All the scientific evidence … shows that an additional booster dose can significantly protect people from hospitalization due to illness, especially the weak and the elderly,” he told Rai state broadcaster.
Italy saw a rise in new coronavirus cases in July. Last week, the number of new daily infections exceeded 100,000 for the first time since February, and hospitals have seen an increase in the number of infections they receive.
