Mexico City.– After Antony Blinken, head of US diplomacy, recognized opposition leader Edmundo González as the winner in Venezuela, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador said that the country’s stance is reckless.
During his morning press conference, López Obrador said that the United States’ attitude does nothing to help solve the Venezuelan post-electoral crisis.
-Do you think that intervention from abroad, with a heavyweight like the United States, could aggravate the crisis in Venezuela?, he was asked.
“I don’t know if it can get worse, but it doesn’t help to resolve things, I say this with all due respect, it’s reckless,” AMLO responded.
López Obrador said that Blinken’s actions were excessive and he overstepped his bounds.
“What the State Department did yesterday was excessive. I apologize to Mr. Blinken, but that is not their responsibility. They are overstepping their boundaries. That does not help peaceful coexistence in harmony between nations,” he said.
The Mexican President said that Mexico, Brazil and Colombia will help in any way they can.
-Would you be willing to join other Latin American leaders in negotiating with the United States or just calling them?
“It was agreed yesterday that the Foreign Ministers, the Foreign Minister of Mexico, the Foreign Ministers of Brazil and Colombia, maintain permanent communication because President Petro, rightly, said yesterday that the statement was good, but that it was not enough, that we had to be vigilant, that it was a first step and that the Foreign Ministers, the Foreign Minister of Mexico, the Foreign Minister of Brazil, and Colombia, observe the events and from there make proposals to help us in any way we can,” said López Obrador.
“Thinking beyond partisan, political, and ideological differences, putting the interests of the people of Venezuela, and the people of Venezuela in general, first.”
“Not seeing this issue as a confrontation between enemies, but rather an electoral process in which adversaries, but Venezuelans, from the same people, from the same nation, compete.”
López Obrador proposed a “vote by vote, polling station by polling station.”
He added that a possible vote by the OAS would not resolve the situation.
