Correct oral health is essential not only to have a beautiful and pleasant smile, but also to avoid loss of teeth and the appearance of certain diseases. However, many people have serious difficulties in coping with many of the treatments necessary to preserve dental hygiene.
According to a survey carried out by the Organization of Consumers and Users (OCU), only 58% of those surveyed attend once a year to the dentist for a routine check-up, as recommended. 10% do it every two years, 14% even less frequently and the remaining 18% say they never go or only when a tooth hurts or they have mouth problems.
Consequently, from the same survey it appears that only half of the consumers surveyed rate their oral health as good or very good.
The main reason for not visiting the dentist more often is economic: many find it too expensive and cannot easily bear that cost. Of the 72% of respondents who had to pay for the entire treatment out of pocket, a third of respondents found it difficult or very difficult to afford the cost of the treatments.
On the other hand, only 5% of those surveyed were able to go to the public healthwhich barely covers dental extractions, some oral diseases and some preventive measures for children and pregnant women. For treatments as common as fillings or root canals, you must necessarily go to a private dentist.
