Snapchat has recently introduced My Selfiea new feature that lets users create AI-generated images based on their photos. However, this new feature has raised some concerns about user privacy. According to 404 Media, Snapchat may be using selfies created with My Selfie for advertising purposes.
In fact, when activating the feature, users are asked to accept the terms of use, which include authorization to use their image in “personalized sponsored content and ads”.
“You further acknowledge and agree that by using My Selfie, you (or your likeness) may also appear in personalized sponsored content and ads that are visible only to you and include branding or other advertising from Snap or its business partners without compensation to you,” the terms of service read.
While you can turn this off in your settings, it is enabled by default. Snapchat has assured that while AI-generated selfies can be used for personalized ads, user data is not shared with third-party advertisers. The company also said it does not currently use My Selfie in advertising.
“Advertisers do not have access to Snapchatters’ Gen AI data in any way, including My Selfie, nor do they have access to Snapchatters’ private data, including Memories, that would allow them to create an AI-generated image of an individual Snapchatter,” Snapchat spokeswoman Maggie Cherneff told The Verge. Snap also does not currently use My Selfie in advertising, Cherneff added.
Despite these reassurances, the issue raises important questions about privacy and the use of personal data in the age of artificial intelligence. Users should always be aware of how their images are being used and have the ability to control their privacy settings in a clear and transparent way.
