The man who broke into the home of Member of Parliament Wybren van Haga in Haarlem last Thursday was a 62-year-old fellow citizen. He was transferred to a care institution by the police because of ‘misunderstood behaviour’.
This is reported by the police in Haarlem after questions from this site. It is not yet clear what the man’s motive was and whether this has anything to do with Van Haga’s political position. “We are now investigating whether there have been any criminal offenses and if so, which ones,” said a police spokesperson.
Van Haga (BVNL) reported last week during a debate in the House of Representatives that an intruder had entered his house. According to the MP, the man specifically asked for him. “He shouted something about a machine gun and a chessboard, then literally fought his way in and stood in the hallway of my house. He was clearly looking for me,” said Van Haga.
At the time, employees of a security company were just installing a new alarm. ,,They pushed the man out horizontally and thus managed to prevent worse. I am really grateful to those people.”
I do not recognize the man on camera images, but I did hear that he lives within 100 meters of my house.
Van Haga reports to this site today that he has now viewed camera images of the incident. “I don’t recognize the man, but I heard that he lives within 100 meters of my house.”
‘Misunderstood behaviour’
The police do not want to comment on the latter for privacy reasons, but do confirm that it concerns a resident of Haarlem. “He showed, as we call it, misunderstood behaviour. We are not the experts in this, so the man has been transferred to the care framework,” said the spokesperson.
This may mean that the man has been transferred to, for example, the GGZ. Police have not said whether the man has been admitted or has now returned home. The House of Representatives, on behalf of Van Haga, has filed a report against the man. Once the investigation into the possible criminal offenses has been completed, it will be decided whether the man will be prosecuted.
Last week, about an hour after the incident, Van Haga appealed to his fellow politicians in the House of Representatives to stop making fun of each other. “It’s going too far now.” GroenLinks leader Jesse Klaver then stated that he thinks it is terrible what happened to Van Haga. “Very strong with the situation. Unfortunately, we all face threats. I know the impact of that.”
Last year, the Public Prosecution Service (OM) brought 62 people to court on suspicion of threatening politicians. This year, a man who stood in front of Minister Sigrid Kaag’s house with a burning torch in January was sentenced to six months in prison.
