An obstetric emergency in El Salvador could be the way to end up behind bars. It is estimated that in the last 20 years, 181 Salvadorans were criminally prosecuted for suspected abortions when they occurred spontaneously or accidentally. Carmen Cecilia Martínez, Associate Director of Strategies at the Center for Reproductive Rights, states that criminalization prevails in the country before the principle of presumption of innocence.
