Gas, Meloni: “The priority is to stop speculation”. The Farnesina convenes the Russian ambassador
One day after the suspension of supplies from Russia, gas remains at the top of the priorities of the Italian government and also of those preparing to occupy Palazzo Chigi. “The priority is to stop gas speculation”, the president of Fratelli d’Italia Giorgia Meloni wrote today on Twitter, while the Draghi government continues to promote the introduction of a price cap at European level.
“Continuing indefinitely to offset the cost of bills by giving money to those who are getting rich on the shoulders of citizens and businesses, would be a mistake”, underlined the winner of the last political elections, confirming the choice of continuity with the government’s line in load.
“Here we are in a war economy, the free market can wait”, said today the Minister of Ecological Transition, Roberto Cingolani, explaining the differences with the other member countries in the negotiations for the “European price cap”. “The Germans are more worried about the lack of gas than about the price, but for the other 26 states this is not the case”, he said during an interview with the broadcast “Mezz’ora più” on Rai 3. According to the outgoing minister, a solution “Reasonable” could be to “index the price of gas by hooking it to stock exchanges that are a little more stable than the TTF”. “We have found a mechanism to save ‘goats and cabbages’ and in the next 48 hours we will send our proposal”, specified Cingolani, who reassured on the availability of gas in Italy, after the suspension of supplies from Gazprom which according to Eni has adduced “The impossibility of transporting gas through Austria”.
“In Italy at the moment we are exporting, we have a positive situation, thanks to diversification. Today there were over 40 million cubic meters of gas for storage and between 18 and 20 million exported “, said the minister, arguing that” we must distinguish the economic-inflationary fears for costs from fears about the quantities of gas ” . “The situation in terms of quantity is not complex, that of costs is,” he explained.
As part of a coordinated initiative at the European level, Italy has summoned Russian ambassador Sergei Razov for tomorrow. According to Cingolani, tomorrow Razov will have to clarify to the foreign ministry “the situation of the sabotages of North Stream 1 and 2”. “A point will also be made on the war, and every diplomatic and constructive attempt to bring the conflict to an end is welcome,” added the minister.
