Thousands of Brazilians, many dressed in red or green and yellow, faced long lines this Sunday in Portugal to vote in the first round of presidential elections.
According to data from the Foreigners and Borders Service (SEF), 205,000 Brazilian citizens live in the Iberian country – which represents a third of the population that is abroad.
Lisbon, with 45 thousand people, concentrates the largest share of Brazilians, followed by Porto and Faro.
The consul general of Brazil in the Portuguese capital, Wladimir Waller, expressed satisfaction with the large presence of voters from the first hours of voting.
“The flow of people is quite intense, which leads us to believe that the presence will be quite large, expressive”, said the diplomat, a few hours before the opening of the polls, according to the news agency “Lusa”.
As in Lisbon, in the city of Porto there were also long lines.
The place chosen to receive the polls in the capital was the headquarters of the Faculty of Law. Voters had to form a long line and waited over an hour in the intense heat.
The process took place calmly, without setbacks, even with the large number of people sporting colors that indicated support for the main candidates, the current president, Jair Bolsonaro, and former president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
Voting will remain open in Portugal until 5 pm local time (1 pm Brasília time), as determined by the Superior Electoral Court of Brazil.
