From 1 January, players who have expired their contracts become masters of their own destiny: in Serie A alone there will be 114 released players
Never so long and never so rich. There is a list that circulates in Europe and makes the managers of the main clubs look as pale as the fans of every team dream. The classic list of “free transfer”, or those players who have an expiring contract and will release next June 30, in 2022 turns into a sparkling sticker album where there is no shortage of champions such as Mbappé, top players like Pogba and Dybala, European champions like Belotti, Insigne and Bernardeschi, talented young people like Dembele and a potential army of opportunities. It’s a golden business, but mostly it’s their business.
All these players in a few days will be owners of their own cards and therefore will have destiny in their hands, indeed in their feet, since the current club will not collect a euro in case of departure in the summer, while those directly interested will be able to increase the their salaries thanks to the savings they will guarantee to their new company for the “free” purchase. Even if it is free, it is never free, given that between commissions from agents, gifts to relatives-attorneys or various entrance bonuses the zero parameter is rarely free.
In a market strongly affected by Covid, in 2020 there was a reduction of 2 billion euros globally on business, free agents are coveted by everyone and so the register has become even more crowded and luxurious. Shines the star of Mbappé, betrothed to Real Madrid, and an international auction can be opened on Pogba (PSG wants it most of all), but there is a revolution that can break out. In the 5 main European leagues, there are 539 players of all kinds who are expiring their contracts and just to stay in Serie A, the number of potential free agents is 114: Lazio and Udinese have 9 each, while Inter are champions. Italy and winter champion has 8 and above all the two Croatians Brozovic and Perisic stand out. Milan is not better placed with 5 elements, including Kessie and Ibrahimovic, and the same number touches Juve. In addition to the soap opera Dybala, the agreement is armored and only the FIFA agent’s license would be missing for the representative of the Argentine striker, the imminent renewal of Cuadrado dances, while the fate of Bernardeschi, Perin and De Sciglio is all to be written.
At home Toro, on the other hand, Rincon, Baselli, Ansaldi and Belotti expire: the thorniest case is the Gallo, increasingly distant (it has not accepted the latest proposal from Cairo) and ready to restart in July with a new team. That of captains who can leave seems to be a trend, given that in addition to Belotti there are also Handanovic (Inter), Romagnoli (Milan) and Insigne (Naples) in the balance.
January thus becomes the decisive month to resolve these situations: time is short, but it is enough to find an agreement on the renewal or change team immediately, making the club that sells monetize. Otherwise, the break is just around the corner, with all the side effects of the case. Each potential free agent is a separate case and the strategies are constantly changing. Milan, for example, with Donnarumma has already demonstrated last summer that you can give up a champion in order not to bow to the exorbitant and over-budget demands of your players. The game is on, but it has just begun.
