Coag denounces the “high risk” for the agriculture of the Levant, and the cooperatives in block support the irrigators
The adhesions and pronouncements in favor of the concentration of Madrid are growing. Coag-IR Murcia considered that the “cut” of the Transfer “is yet another example, the umpteenth, of how the current system of political majorities in Spain has condemned the Region of Murcia to “ostracism”, inflicting “recurring punishments to satisfy to other territories in which elements of adhesion and political revenue have been created, such as water, which break all logic of coexistence and sense of State”.
The president of Coag-IR, José Miguel Marín, warned in a statement of the “high risk” that the “cutting” of the water provided by the Transfer supposes for the Spanish Levante. He warned that “arbitrary and unfair” decisions such as “destroying the economic fabric of all Murcians, in this case denying us water, lead to the disintegration of cohesion between Spaniards.” Coag will participate in the mobilization to demand «respect for the Region of Murcia; and, respect in the form of water to produce food.
The Regional Federation of Organizations and Transport Companies of Murcia (Froet) also showed its “total support” for the concentration, through the presence of fifty trucks, said its general secretary, Manuel Pérezcarro. He said that the water resources from the Tagus are “necessary for the survival of the Region”, while warning about the economic and labor consequences that the closure of the Transfer would entail, since Murcia is the province with the largest refrigerated fleet in the country and Its main activity is fruit and vegetable export. “The refrigerated transport sector, the most important in the Region of Murcia, goes hand in hand with fruit and vegetable production,” he said.

The Union of Cooperatives of the Region of Murcia (Ucomur), the Union of Teaching Cooperatives of the Region of Murcia (Ucoerm) and the Business Association of Labor and Participated Societies of the Region of Murcia (Amusal) will join the irrigators in tomorrow’s demonstration in Madrid. As reported by Ucomur in a statement, these representative organizations of the regional social economy position themselves together with the Irrigation Union in defense of water as an “essential resource for the development of a large number of productive sectors in the Region of Murcia”, which they will be “in danger if we lack water.”
“Water is essential for the proper functioning of our region and for the progress of our society. We cannot give it up; We understand and share the demands of the irrigators and we join their protest because there is a lot at stake”, indicated the presidents of Ucomur and Ucoerm, Juan Antonio Pedreño, and of Amusal, José Francisco Ballester. They added that the lack of water and, therefore, its scarcity for irrigation, “can endanger thousands of jobs in the Region of Murcia and reduce the production of some of the main activities and exports of our land” . “As business organizations we support the development of our region and our site is together with the irrigators, joining forces.”
