Alejandro Garnacho posted a picture of his teammate, but quickly deleted it.
Manchester United keeper André Onana defends his teammate Alejandro Garnachoa regarding the picture he posted on Instagram.
Garnacho and Onana were prominently featured when ManU beat Copenhagen 1-0 in the Champions League match on Tuesday.
Garnacho’s action sparked a debate when he dug a penalty spot after a worse-than-expected Copenhagen was awarded a penalty in the final moments of the match. Onana parried by Jordan Larsson overtime try and secured the victory for the hosts.
After the match, Garnacho posted a picture of Onana surrounded by Manu players in his Instagram stories. Garnacho attached two gorilla emojis to the picture.
Cameroonian Onana is black, so Garnacho’s gorilla emoji could be seen as racist. Garnacho removed the photo soon after it was published.
Onana lined up to support his teammate on Thursday. He posted the same picture on Instagram stories with accompanying words.
“People can’t decide what I should be offended by. I know exactly what Garnacho meant: strength and power. This matter should not go any further,” Onana wrote.
