Residence|The city is also planning to extend the popular beach track to the entire length of the coastline.
Espoo wants more small houses in Mustalahti near the Kirkkonummi border. At the same time, it plans to investigate the continuation of the popular coastal route.
The city’s dream is that in the future there could be detached houses for 500–700 residents in the area.
Mustalahti is located in the Kurttila district in West Espoo. It is a green, single-family house area built with open space. There are now fifty apartments.
Under development the area has significant natural values. Flying squirrels and cloaked frogs live there, for example. Near the shore, there is an area of sea urchin beetle that is significant on a European scale.
The sea-dwelling beetle is a pacified and watchful species of beetle that lives in water.
On the western edge of the planning area is the Espoonlahti nature reserve, which belongs to the Natura 2000 network. Part of the Natura area is located in an area subject to urban planning.
In addition to natural values, cultural and historical values are linked to Mustalahti, such as the ancient remains of the Åminne brick factory and the communal beaches inherited from Kurttila’s historical fishing culture.
In addition, there are old buildings in the area, which, according to the city, already have potential preservation values due to their age. The city studies their protection in connection with the zoning.
Small houses are now a hot potato in Espoo. The city is currently preparing a new master plan that extends to 2060, which aims to contribute to solving how Espoo prepares for strong population growth.
The city’s coalition politicians have started a fight for small houses and against apartment buildings.
However, the construction of small houses has continued to be lively in Espoo in recent years. More new small houses have been built in the city than, for example, in the neighboring municipalities of Helsinki or Vantaa.
Beach sober the city would continue to the Espoonjoki estuary. If implemented, it would cover the entire Espoo beach zone.
Later, the route could continue along the Espoonjoki branch to Kauklahti and the center of Espoo, according to the presentation prepared by city officials.
In the site planning, it is intended to take into account the nature reserve of Espoonlahti and the typical features of the area’s landscape, such as forested areas, a tree-lined coastal zone and fields.
Espoo’s politicians will decide on the plans at the city planning committee on Wednesday.
