By now you know it: at the unveiling of the RB18, the real car of Max Verstappen was not shown, but a generic show model. Red Bull wanted to keep all aerodynamic interventions by Adrian Newey under wraps for a while. After all, you don’t want to give the competition anything to copy.
While Red Bull (and all the other teams) will undoubtedly keep everything a secret until the first race, the RB18 really had to go out during the first day of testing in Barcelona. The actual Red Bull RB18 of Max Verstappen can be seen there for the first time.
Red Bull shows the RB18 a bit
Red Bull did of course choose some tactical photos to make public. For example, the details are poorly visible (we raised the first photo a bit in Photoshop) and there are no photos from the back from the team. Fortunately, there is still such a thing as Twitter, where you can find better pictures of the details. Only then is it clearly visible that Red Bull chose a completely different route than the competing teams.
What stands out are the side pods. These are the air intakes next to the driver. They are substantial and float, as it were, on the RB18. At the very bottom of the page you can only really see how radical the design is in a comparison. The diffuser is also nice and extreme and the whole car looks aggressive. We will only really see the effects of these components during the first race in Bahrain.
